I have a wonderful armchair (also called a wing chair) in my living room that I love sitting in for reading and watching movies. In fact, ever since college, I’ve always had an armchair for relaxing.
One problem I have is that I shave my head and when I lean my head against the top of my armchair, in time it slightly colors from my head. This is why wing chair slipcovers are especially useful for me. Moreover, if you have hair, it too can discolor your favorite armchair.
Armchair slipcovers do more than protect your chair
Sure, I like using wing chair slipcovers to protect my chair from discoloring; however a slipcover is particularly good for dressing it up.
I used to have an old, 1980′s armchair that wasn’t very attractive, but was incredibly comfortable.

How to choose wing chair slipcovers
There are a number of factors to consider when buying armchair slipcovers. They are:
- Fit
- Color
- Material
- Box or T-Cushion
- 1 or 2 Piece
1. Fit
Your basic fit consideration is whether to get a loose or tight-fitting slipcover for your armchair.
Loose or relaxed fit slipcovers give a more casual appearance. The image above is a loose or relaxed fit wing chair slipcover.
Form-fitting (also called elastic fitting) retain the appearance and shape of your chair. Form fitting armchair slipcovers are more difficult to put on your chair. They need to fit just right and the folds must align correctly with the edges of your.
Loose-fitting slipcovers are much easier to place on your armchair because it drapes rather than having to be precisely fitted to every edge.
If you don’t care for the shape of your chair or like the loose slipcover appearance, then go for a loose style.
2. Color
One of the biggest benefits of using slipcovers is that you can choose from a huge variety of colors. This way you can ensure that your armchairs work with the color and design of any room. If you change your interior design, simply buy new armchair slipcovers rather than buying new chairs.

Patterned slipcovers
You can also find slipcovers that are patterned. These are also called multi-color slipcovers.
In my view it’s harder to choose a patterned slipcover because there isn’t a great deal of selection and variety.
3. Material
Slipcover materials for wing chairs include:
- Cotton
- Polyester
- Denim
- Suede
4. Box or T-Cushion
Most wing chairs have a T-cushion design. Therefore there are far more T-cushion design slipcovers. What’s the difference?

5. 1 or 2 Piece
Most wing chair slipcovers are 1 piece. However, there are some that are 2 piece which means there’s a separate slip cover for the seat cushion. The immediate image above is a 2 piece slipcvoer.
Other armchair slipcover buying considerations:
1. Machine washable
If at all possible, buy slipcovers that are machine washable. This will save you time and money in the long run.
That said, if you have a particular preference, don’t compromise your choice on this factor alone.
2. Price
Expect to pay roughly $20 to $100 per armchair slipcover. I actually think that the cost of slipcovers is cheap considering the benefits you gain.
3. Chemicals
Perhaps you’re concerned about chemicals in your home. If you are, you will want to look for natural-fabric armchair slipcovers such as cotton.
Don’t buy a new chair; buy an armchair slipcover
The trouble with older furniture is you can’t sell it for much. I often see furniture out on a home’s curb with a “free” sign. They can’t get rid of it. On the flip side, buying new furniture is expensive. Most people have to save up to buy new armchairs or other types of sitting furniture.
Wing chair slipcovers are an excellent solution when you need a new looking chair without spending a great deal of money.
